Here Comes the Sun: 4 Options for Non-Toxic Sun Protection

Summer is coming, promise! It keeps teasing but it really is coming. We all know it is important to take care of our skin out in the sun. Normal sunscreens carry toxins like oxybenzone, which has been linked to threats on your health. Why not try out one or two of these recommendations from local KC experts.

I reached out to some of my favorite green beauty babes here in KC to see what current natural sun protection they are recommending this summer. Here is what they shared:

Gina Ciaccio-Holmberg of Within Apothecary is currently using Marie Veronique Tinted Sunscreen, a tinted zinc sunscreen that is available in 3 shades and good for all skins. Zinc oxide protects you from both UVB rays, which cause sunburn, and UVA rays, which could be considered more dangerous.

If you are in KC, swing by Within Apothecary in the West Bottoms to pick it up!

The ladies of Hand and Land share their love for Josh Rosebrook Day cream with SPF. The cream is nutrient rich, meaning it carries potent herbal actives and plant oils said to not only moisturize but to protect and repair skin. They also utilize zinc oxide to provide effective sunblock against skin-damaging solar rays, both UVB and UVA.

You can find it for $50.

Stephanie Simkins at SKIN KC is using all things Suntegrity including face, tinted face, body, lip and bronzer. The whole brand is dedicated to protecting and rejuvenating skin. They formulate their products with antioxidants, amino acids and zinc oxide to repair and protect. The line features sunscreens for the face and body, as well as a gentle formula for sensitive skin and babies.

Products range in price and they are offering a 15% off purchase if you sign up for email.

Sarah Preu of Wild Wash Co says she ops for the all natural approach - Sun hat, lots of leafy greens and low sugar. Whether you are a sunscreen wearer or not, these are great to adopt. Dark, leafy greens provide sun protection. For all you sun lovers, greens provide UV protection at a cellular level through the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin. Low sugar to help avoid AGEs (Advanced glycation end products) which cause aging and are bad for rejuvenating skin, which lets be honest, we all wanna keep our skin young and fresh and sun damage is real.

Now if this dang rain would just go away! Happy summatime, y’all.
